The age of ‘Namban Art’ corresponds to the age of exploration in Europe. In those days, Many Europeans uptook worldwide voyages and ‘discovered’ unknown areas one after another. In the result, their world maps got more accurate and more detailed than before. As Japan, which had been a mythical country formerly, became a real trading partner, its figure and location on world maps also turned more precise.

‘Map of East Indies and Surrounding Islands’ by Abraham Ortelius

The above image is a picture of ‘Map of East Indies and Surrounding Islands’, which was painted by Abraham Ortelius in 1570. In this map, Japan is painted as a mere round island and its figure is not precise at all. Although Europeans had already begun to trade with Japan, the map had not yet shown enough information about Japan.

‘Map of Asia’ by Gerardus Mercator

The above image is a picture of ‘Map of Asia’, which was painted by Gerardus Mercator in 1587. In this map, Japan is painted as an oval island extending from the northeast to southwest. The map includes some place names such as Bandu ( Bandou ) and Cangoxima ( Kagoshima ), but the figure of Japan is imprecise as well as ‘Map of East Indies and Surrounding Islands’.

‘Map of World’ by Petro Plancio

The above image is a picture of ‘Map of World’, which was painted by Petro Plancio in 1594. Petro Plancio was the first cartographer recognized by the Dutch East India Company. Japan, which is located at right edge of this map, is painted not as a single island, but as three islands that corresponding to Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu. This map seems to be more precise than earlier maps.

‘Map of Japan’ by Luis Teixeira

The above image is a picture of ‘Map of Japan’, which was painted by Luis Teixeira in 1595. Luis Teixeira was a Portuguese Jesuit and mathematician. Although this map misses Hokkaido Island, the shapes and positional relation of Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu Islands are fairly precise. In addition, Lake Biwa, the largest lake in Japan, and many rivers are found on this map. Many place names are also almost right. So, the figure of Japan on this map had become an original model of one on later maps.

The Japanese themselves, of course, had made many maps of their own country since earlier times. As Japan had made contact with European countries, Japanese-made maps and European-made ones influenced mutually.

‘Pictorial map of Japan’ by Ishikawa Ryusen

The above image is a picture of ‘Pictorial map of Japan’, which was painted by Ishikawa Ryusen ( Japanese Ukiyoe artist ) in 1712. The shape of Japan on this map is much distorted in order to put maximal information in the limited rectangle. This map puts visible design and practical information ahead of geographical accuracy. Because of this, we can get so much information about famous sights, castle towns, post towns, major roads and waterways, and territory's amount of each lord around the country from this map. This map and similar ones circulated widely in Japan, and some of them flowed out overseas and influenced maps of Japan made in Europe.

‘Map of Japan Empire' by Adrien Reland

The above image is a picture of ‘Map of Japan Empire’ painted by Adrien Reland in 1715. It is apparent that this map imitated Ryusen’s ‘Pictorial map of Japan’ when we compare the both. So this map had less geographical accuracy than earlier maps, but it first showed names of provinces in Japanese as an European-made map. This map clearly shows that European in those days craved for information about Japan.
